Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement following her disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024. This decision came after she was found to be 100 grams over the weight limit for the 50 kg freestyle final against Sarah Hildebrandt of the United States. Her disqualification prevented her from competing in what would have been a historic match for India.
In a heartfelt post on her social media, Vinesh expressed her deep disappointment and sorrow, stating, “Mother wrestling won against me, I lost… Your dreams and my courage are shattered. I don’t have any more strength now” . Despite her disqualification, she has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for a joint silver medal, a decision that is still pending . This marks the end of an illustrious career for Vinesh, who has been a prominent figure in Indian wrestling since 2001, earning multiple medals in Commonwealth and Asian Games.
