Kargil Vijay Diwas” is celebrated every year on July 26th to pay tribute and honor to the soldiers who died in the Kargil War. In 1999, when Pakistani troops secretly captured the high altitudes of Kargil in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army launched Operation Vijay to recapture them. On July 26th, 1999, Indian soldiers defeated Pakistan and re-raised the tricolor on all the Kargil peaks.During this war, 527 Indian soldiers were martyred. Many brave soldiers like Captain Vikram Batra, Manoj Kumar Pandey, and Major Vivek Gupta made the supreme sacrifice for the country.

The main message of the nationwide events organized on this day in 2026 will be “Honoring the Heroes of Kargil through “Nationwide Memorial Outreach and Public Participation.”

The Indian Army is reaching out to local cities and neighborhoods across the country to share the stories of bravery of the brave soldiers of the 1999 Kargil War with the common people.

Special emphasis is being placed on introducing the new generation to the sacrifices of the martyrs through educational institutions and platforms like My Bharat.

Various social organizations are organizing rallies, races, and speech competitions at the local level to mark the occasion, with taglines such as “Salute to the Heroes,” “Dedication to the Nation.”

This year, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is celebrating Kargil Vijay Diwas on a grand scale over two days, July 25th and 26th. It is reported that Dhami organized the “Run for Kargil Heroes” marathon at Shaurya Sthal, Cheedbagh, Gadi Cantt, Dehradun, to mark the occasion. Chief Minister Dhami participated in the Kargil Vijay Diwas event on July 25th, paying tribute to the martyrs at Shaurya Sthal, paying tribute to their supreme sacrifice for the nation. He then flagged off the Run for Kargil Heroes marathon, which generated significant enthusiasm among the public.
On the second day of the event, July 26th, he will participate in a program being held at Gandhi Park in Dehradun, where the families of martyrs, their mothers, and their wives will be honored.

On this occasion, Dhami stated that Kargil Vijay Diwas symbolizes the indomitable courage, valor, and unwavering dedication of the Indian Army. In 1999, brave Indian soldiers displayed exemplary bravery in the face of adversity, defending the motherland and demonstrating the courage of the Indian Army to the world.

He said that the country will always be indebted to its brave soldiers and the sacrifices of the martyrs. Addressing Uttarakhand, he said that Uttarakhand is known as the land of heroes. Many brave soldiers of the state have brought glory to the country with their unparalleled courage and supreme sacrifice in various military operations including the Kargil war. And the state government is continuously working for the welfare of soldiers, ex-servicemen and their dependents and is striving with full commitment to protect their honour and interests. He appealed to the youth to take inspiration from the ideals of the martyrs and contribute actively in nation building and discharge their responsibilities towards the unity, integrity and security of the country with loyalty.
