Veteran actor Anant Nag has been selected for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024, India’s highest honour in cinema, recognising his more than five-decade contribution to Indian cinema. The announcement was made by the Government of India on September 16, 2026, following the recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee. The honour will be presented at the 72nd National Film Awards ceremony in Kevadia, Gujarat, on 22 September 2026.
Nag, 78, has built a career spanning more than 50 years, working predominantly in Kannada cinema while also appearing in Hindi and several other Indian-language films. He has acted in more than 300 films and is known for his natural and versatile performances. His work includes films such as Ankur and Hamsageethe, as well as the hugely popular television series Malgudi Days. His career has also earned him multiple Karnataka State Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards.
With the honour, Anant Nag becomes the second Kannada cinema personality after Dr. Rajkumar to receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Dr. Rajkumar was honoured with the award in 1995, making Nag’s recognition an important moment for Kannada cinema. Nag has also previously received the Padma Bhushan, adding another major national honour to his long list of achievements.
Reacting to the recognition, Nag dedicated the honour to the people of Karnataka and spoke about the role of Kannada cinema in his journey. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the actor, praising his versatility, natural acting and contribution to Indian cinema, particularly Kannada cinema. The award will formally be presented to Nag at the National Film Awards ceremony on September 22.
