From Delhi Dreams to Village Success, The Rise of Uttarakhand’s Mushroom Brothers

There are many inspiring individuals who have taken mushroom farming initiatives to great heights in Uttarakhand. Among them are Sushant Uniyal and Prakash Uniyal, popularly known as the “Mushroom Brothers.” They belong to Dadur village in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. After completing their media studies in Delhi, they decided to leave their corporate jobs in 2017 and return to their ancestral village.

In 2019, they launched “The Project Mushroom,” which has now become the largest oyster mushroom production center in the Garhwal region. Their startup has provided employment opportunities to many local villagers, especially women, and has also encouraged several farmers to adopt mushroom cultivation. According to them, they produce up to 100 kilograms of mushrooms daily, with an annual turnover of around ₹25 lakh.

They believe that mushroom farming is nothing less than a blessing for Uttarakhand, as the state’s climate is highly suitable for it. Mushrooms can be cultivated for 8 to 10 months without the need for expensive air conditioners or sophisticated handling units.

Their journey is a reminder that courageous decisions and passion can bring extraordinary changes in life. From media professionals to successful agricultural entrepreneurs, their story stands as a testament to hard work, innovation, and dedication towards sustainable farming.
